River Birches is also a Fly Fishing mecca, right on the world famous Tongariro River, a short stroll or a quick drive brings you to stretches of water that have drawn anglers from around the world for generations. The Tongariro’s renowned pools, Major Jones, The Duchess (named for the late Duchess of York), and many more, remain as compelling today as when they were first celebrated in classic fishing literature.
Whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying fly fishing for the first time, this river is a superb classroom and a thrilling place to fish. The Tongariro is open year-round, and regulations permit the taking of up to six fish per day (subject to licence and current rules). River Birches provides a complete, polished experience with experienced guides.

Accommodation in Turangi, at River Birches Lodge includes your choice of 3 guest rooms. River Birches is a low-slung, cedar-clad luxury accommodation retreat set within a peaceful, established garden. The stylish interior reflects its east-meets-west character – sophisticated and welcoming. This Turangi lodge was awarded first place in a prestigious New Zealand Architectural competition, testimony to its understated elegance. French doors open onto a large deck where you can relax and enjoy the serenity of the Tongariro riverside environment.
There is a well-equipped fitness room, satellite TV, a DVD library, spacious living areas with Wi-Fi and broadband internet services. In summer, air conditioning keeps things comfortable.

River Birches has three guest rooms – each a quiet haven of comfort and style. They are well appointed to ensure you enjoy your stay. All rooms include:
– super king-size beds with sumptuous down-filled duvets and pillows, monogrammed bathrobes.

While many of our guests come to enjoy the scenic surrounds, superb fly fishing, gourmet food, and exceptional hospitality, increasingly great walks enthusiasts are taking advantage of our closeness to the world famous Tongariro Crossing, as River Birches is the closest Luxury lodge to the Tongariro National Park which is just a short drive away from the Lodge.
River Birches is pleased to offer as well The Cottage at River Birches, which is a self-contained, architecturally designed property built in the style of our lodge. This has proved popular with single party bookings (2-6 guests), who seek upmarket accommodation with self-service catering and the ability to obtain additional services, such as gourmet meals prepared for them by the lodge’s chef.
Dining at The Lodge
A cooked breakfast is included in the tariff. If you prefer something a little lighter, try our continental breakfast of homemade cereals and preserves, fresh seasonal fruits and yoghurt. Dinner and lunch are available by advance request or buy purchasing the now available Dinner, Bed and Breakfast rates. We understand and can accommodate for low-carb, high-protein meals and individual requirements, by advance request. We use only the best locally grown, organic produce whenever available.
